VAKIFBANK Istanbul bagged the bronze medal with a 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-11 victory over Volero Zurich on Sunday in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Lonneke Sloetjes scored 16 points, all from spikes, for the team from Turkey, which won gold in 2013 and silver in 2011.
Milena Rasic added 15 points, including the bronze medal-clinching block, while Zhu Ting, a member of the Rio Olympics gold meda winning Chinese team, added 13.
Skipper Gozde Kindar had 11 points for VakifBank Istanbul.
“I’m proud of my players they finished with the win,” said VakifBank coach Giovanni Guidetti. “They had the courage, and it’s nice to get the win even if it’s not the finals we hoped for.”
“I think after that loss in the second set our team did not stop fighting that’s why we won the match,” said Sloetjes.
VakifBank had 19 blocks, including seven from Rasic and five from Zhu.
Dobriana Rabadzhieva scored 13 for Volero Zurich, while Foluke Akinradewo added 10.
