FAR Eastern University defeated University of the Philippines, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 15-9, on Monday in the opener of the battle for third place at Philsports Arena.

Heather Guino-o had 23 hits, including 19 attack points, while Toni Rose Basas had 21 points as the Lady Tams withstood the Lady Maroons’ spirited fightback and took the win in one hour and 57 minutes.

FEU, the top-seeded team which lost to No. 4 Ateneo in the semifinals, looked set for a quick win but let the Lady Maroons get back and force a decider.

"Nag-relax kami ng dalawang sets. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, 'Grabe kayo magpahinga dalawang sets,'" said FEU coach Shaq Delos Santos. "Sabi ko na lang sa kanila na kalimutan na lang (ang third at fourth sets) and mag-focus na lang sa last set."

The fifth set was tied at 6-6 when the Lady Tams took control by winning the next four points.

Nicole Tiamzon scored 19 points, Isa Molde added 16 and Diana Carlos contributed 15 for UP.

FEU goes for the clincher on Wednesday also at Philsports Arena.
