PHILIPPINE Army whipped Cagayan Valley, 25-14, 25-7, 25-23, to complete a sweep of the V-League Open Conference final on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Troopers returned to the top of the V-League after claiming the Open title in 2011 and completed a golden double after ruling the Super Liga All Filipino last month.

“Huling championship namin 2011 pa, gusto ko lang makabalik ulit sa championship,” said Army coach Rico de Guzman.

Finals MVP Jovelyn Gonzaga, Ging Balse and conference MVP Rachel Anne Daquis scored 13 points each, while Nene Bautista had 10.

The powerhouse Army squad dominated the entire match as it took care of the net with 11 blocks against just two by Cagayan Valley, and four service aces against none by the Rising Suns.

None from the Lady Rising Suns, who had a 16-game sweep of last year's import-laced tournament, scored in twin digits, with Aiza Maizo coming up with just eight points.

Trailing by four, 11-15, in the third set, the Lady Rising Suns came up with a 6-1 run to snatch the lead, 17-16.

Cagayan stayed on the driver's seat, 23-21, with Maizo scoring three consecutive points, but Daquis and Gonzaga were quick to retaliate to tie the contest 23-all.

Maizo committed an error at the net to give Army match point and Gonzaga scored the championship winner.

“Hindi ko po kasi ine-expect na mag Finals MVP, never ko in-expect,” said Gonzaga. “Gusto ko lang talaga makatulong sa team, ang gola naman talaga namin championship.”
