Army eyeing to finish PLDT Home Ultera as Lady Troopers seek V-League title
Will Philippine Army celebrate a second straight Shakey's V-League title on Sunday?

DEFENDING champion Philippine Army isn’t looking to prolong the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference Finals against embattled PLDT Home Ultera as it goes for the kill in Sunday’s Game Two at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Troopers took the opener, 13-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-22, and are gunning for a sweep of the best-of-three title series with another win in the 12:45 p.m. encounter.

“Gusto na namin tapusin,” said Army coach Rico de Guzman. “Mas mahirap pa kung hahaba pa kasi makukuha nila ang momentum. Kaya kung kaya na namin tapusin, tatapusin na namin.”

Jovelyn Gonzaga and guest player Dindin Santiago-Manabat took charge for the Lady Troopers in the Game One win with 16 points apiece, while veteran setter Tina Salak dished out 32 of the team’s 33 excellent sets to put a stop to the Ultra Fast Hitters’ 10-game winning run.

PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb admitted the Army trio of Gonzaga, Santiago-Manabat, and Salak hurt the team most during the series opener, but is confident the Ultera Fast Hitters can bounce back and force a decider.

“Natalo kami (sa Game One), pero babawi kami sa Sunday. Tapos bawi ulit sa susunod, isa-isa lang muna,” said the veteran mentor.

The Ultra Fast Hitters will again rely on Alyssa Valdez, who fired 25 points, and Jaja Santiago, who had 11.

Meanwhile, Cagayan tries to wrap up its own series for third place against Meralco when it seeks a sweep of the similar best-of-three series at 9 a.m.

The Lady Rising Suns won Game One in straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23, on Thursday behind Janine Marciano, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, and Rosemarie Vargas.
