PHILIPPINE Army took the top spot in the semifinals with a 15-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15 win over PLDT on Sunday in the V-League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

The 2011 Open Conference champion improved its win-loss record to 7-3, while PLDT dropped to second spot at 6-4.

The Army stayed on track in its bid for twin titles after ruling the Super Liga All Filipino crown last month, but their V-League semifinal opponents won’t be known until Tuesday when Air Force and Ateneo battle in a playoff for the No. 4 spot.

Army coach Rico de Guzman revealed he would rather play military archrival Air Women than the battle the Lady Eagles and their horde of supporters, likening the UAAP champions to PBA crowd darling Ginebra.

“Mas gusto ko na ’yung Air Force,” he said.

“Kasi ang Ateneo parang Barangay Ginebra ’yan eh. Dala lahat ng crowd. ’Yung pagka-beterano ng team ko nawawala pag Ateneo ang kalaban.”

The Army actually bowed to Ateneo in the quarterfinal round just last week.

Rachel Anne Daquis and Ging Balse scored 13 points each for the Army, while Jovelyn Gonzaga and Nene Bautista had 10 apiece.

PLDT faces Cagayan, which secured the No. 3 spot, face off in the best-of-three semifinals starting on Thursday.

Gretchel Soltones came up with 16 points for the Power Attackers, while Sue Roces and Royce Estampa contributed 10 markers each.
