OVEREXCITEMENT obviously got the better of returning Kathy Bersola as the University of the Philippines ace blocker played her first competitive game on Saturday after being out of action over the last nine months due to injury.

The incoming fifth year Lady Maroon only had five points in the team’s easy 25-20, 25-22, 27-25 victory over Philippine Coast Guard in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

The UAAP best blocker admitted that instead of boosting her game, the excitement to play again got the better of her after coming off the bench in the third set.

“Siguro overexcited lang talaga ako,” she said. “Parang feel na feel ko na gusto kong pumuntos, gusto kong magawa yung mga ginagawa ko dati. Overexcited lang siguro kasi kababalik ko lang.”

“Medyo (nanggigigil) lang ako,” she added. “Siguro more training and more exposure. Siguro kailangan ko rin ng mga relaxing techniques during games.”

After all the tests, therapies, and workouts, Bersola disclosed she is 85 percent recovered.

UP coach Gerry Yee said once fully recovered, Bersola will not be treated differently in the team, saying she also has to do what her teammates do during training.

“Si Bersola parang limited pa ‘yung motion. Ayaw din natin siyang biglain,” said Yee. “Although mayroon tayong agreement with her and her family na when she finally gets released kumbaga hindi pupuwedeng bini-baby namin siya.”

“Talagang we play her, we expose her. Pati sa drills hindi naman masyadong easy ang drills for her. Hard drills din siya e, although nakikita pa rin na limited ang motion niya and naiilang pa rin,” he added.

Yee, however, understands Bersola is still in the process of recuperating.

“Nagko-compensate ang other parts of her body even though wala silang nararamdamang sakit sa actual injury, nagko-compensate ang other parts. Medyo ganoon talaga kapag galing sa operation,” he said.
