DEFENDING champion Philippine Army survived Meralco, 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-9, on Thursday at the start of the single round semifinals of the Shakey's V-League Season 12 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Jovelyn Gonzaga led the way for the Lady Troopers with 15 points, guest player Dindin Santiago-Manabat added 13, Rachel Anne Daquis chipped in 12, recruit Honey Tubino had 11 and Mary Jean Balse contributed 10.

"Kung kailangan balasahin, babalasahin natin ang mga tao para sa laro," said Army coach Rico de Guzman, who fielded all but one of his 12 players in a match that took two hours and 10 minutes.

Cha Cruz had 17 points for Meralco, while Aby Maraño finished with 16 and Maica Morada had 11 for Meralco.

Santiago-Manabat, Daquis, Cruz, Maraño, Morada, Carmina Aganon, Paneng Mercado, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Jen Reyes left the venue immediately after the match to play in the Philippine Super Liga Finals.
