JANINE Marciano led the way as Bali Pure edged Laoag, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11, on Wednesday to close in on third place in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Open Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Marciano scored 25 points, 23 on attacks, while NCAA back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones of San Sebastian added 20 markers as the Purest Water Defenders took the opener of the best-of-three series.

Bali Pure is 2-0 against Laoag this conference and playing coach Charo Soriano was pleased to see Marciano take charge with Alyssa Valdez out.

“You saw Janine Marciano play middle in the last couple of games and now she’s back to her old position which is outside hitter,” said Soriano.

Amy Ahomiro had 12 points and Dzi Gervacio scored 10. Jem Ferrer dished out 62 of Bali Pure’s 63 excellent sets in the match that lasted almost two hours.

Valdez is with the Ateneo Lady Eagles in Singapore for the 18th Asean University Games.

“We can’t take the next game lightly, again, Laoag played solid also and they have very strong outside hitters and a veteran setter,” said Soriano.

Jessica Galanza had 16 points for Laoag, Jovielyn Prado scored 15, Mylene Paat added 13 and Katherine Villegas registered 10 points.
