INSTITUTO Estetico Manila finally got the right blend of players as it ended the first round of elimination on a winning note after downing Far Eastern University in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, in the men's division of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Foreign Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Tuesday.

Former FEU standout Karl dela Calzada torched his former team for 11 points, while Salvador Timbal added for the Phoenix Volley Masters, who fielded in just nine players.

IEM is now on the solo lead with a 2-1 card after being stretched in five sets in their first two matches against Systema (17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12) and Rizal Technological University (22-25, 27-25, 25-12, 27-29, 11-15)..

“Experimental kasi ang first two games namin. As much as possible magamit lahat ng players, pero ngayon kung mapapansin mo limited lang ang substitution ko," said IEM coach Jun Balubar, who only used three substitute players during the entire match that took only an hour and 22 minutes to complete.

Behind by four in the third set (11-15), IEM went on a 9-2 run behind dela Calzada and Timbal to snatch the lead, 20-17.

FEU cut the deficit to 20-22, but Jeffrey Jimenez and Michael Conde came through to seal the win for IEM.

The Phoenix Volley Masters earned 30 points from the Tamaraws’ miscues.

Greg Dolor and Franco Camcam delivered 11 markers each for the Tamaraws, who fell to a 1-2 record.
