Ultra Fast Hitters down Lady Maroons in four to gain share of second in V-League
Gretcel Soltones and the Ultra Fast Hitters move to a three-way tie or second.

PLDT gained a share of second spot with a 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17 victory over University of the Philippines on Saturday in the Shakey's V-League -Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

San Sebastian’s Gretcel Soltones and San Beda’s Janine Marciano, rivals in the NCAA, each scored 16 as the Ultra Fast Hitters scored their second win in three matches.

Army leads with a 2-0 win-loss record while PLDT, UP and Navy all hold 2-1 cards.

Coast Guard scored its first win in the tournament, 12-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 17-15, to keep newcomer Kia winless.

"We just minimized the errors and received well especially in the last two sets," said PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb, seeking a triple after steering PLDT to the Open Conference crown and the National U to the Collegiate Conference championship.

The Ultra Fast Hitters also bucked the continued absence of top hitter and league MVP Alyssa Valdez, who is out with a back injury.

"We're still not sure when she is returning but we hope it will be soon," said Gorayeb of the prized Ateneo hitter.

UP, which impressed a lot by sweeping its first two games, dropped out of joint lead but remained in the semis race of the tournament presented by PLDT Home Ultera and backed by Mikasa and Accel.

Isabel Molde had 11 hits, while and Diana Carlos had 10 markers.

The Lady Maroons held their own in net defense, producing nine blocks against PLDT’s three but struggled in their service reception, allowing the Ultra Fast Hitters to score 12 aces.
