Unbeaten UP Lady Maroons tame shorthanded UST Tigresses in five-set thriller

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines survived undermanned University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 13-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-6, in the Shakey's V-League Seaosn 13 Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena on Saturday.

The Lady Maroons copped its third win in as many games and took the solo lead in Group B.

Isa Molde had 16 points for UP, while Justine Dorog added 14, Kathy Bersola chipped in 12 and Diana Carlos contributed 10 markers.

"Timing natin naka-pick up tayo sa laro and naka-service tayo sa laro," said UP coach Jerry Yee.

The Diliman-based spikers built an early lead in the deciding set, 4-1, before they widened the gap, 11-5, en route to snatch the victory from the Tigresses.

Guest player Eya Laure had 20 points for UST, while Ria Meneses finished with 18 markers, including seven blocks.

UST missed skipper EJ Laure and Sisi Rondina, who played for Foton in the Philippine Super Liga Finals.

The Tigresses duo will again not suit up on Wednesday against Far Eastern University as they will still play in the PSL for the championship.

Aside from Laure and Rondina, Chloe Cortez, Jem Guttierez and Kathlyn Viray also did not play.

Cortez was at the venue but she was in street clothes, while Gutierrez and Viray are in Legazpi, Albay for the Beach Volleyball Republic.
