Former UP stars Tiamzon, Bersola lead Perlas past Lady Maroons to keep PVL Open semis hopes alive

BANKO-Perlas kept its semis hopes alive after it downed University of the Philippines, 30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Former UP standouts Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively, and turned back their alma matter to improve a 2-3 win-loss record tied with Bali Pure.

“Step by step, na parang we need to win every game,” said Tiamzon.

“So ngayon, nage-gain ulit kami ng confidence to play against Bali Pure this Saturday. So naka-gain kami ng momentum, as much as possible,” she added.

Ella de Jesus also had 15 markers and 17 digs, while skipper Sue Roces added 13 for the Spikers, who bounced back from a previous loss to the Power Smashers.

Seasoned setter Jem Ferrer tossed 59 of the team’s 63 excellent sets for BanKo-Perlas, while libero Gizelle Tan had 21 digs and 15 excellent receptions in a match that took almost two hours to finish.

Team captain Diana Carlos made 24 points for UP, while Isa Molde had 18 and Maristela Layug chipped in 10.

The Lady Maroons dropped to 1-4.
