VOLLEYBALL fans will have to wait for a while to see Alyssa Valdez play again as she takes a leave of absence with the Ateneo Lady Eagles.

The UAAP back-to-back MVP did not suit up for the Lady Eagles in their Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference debut against University of Santo Tomas, saying she was advised to take a much-needed break.

“Wala, hindi muna ako lalaro. Pahinga muna, ayaw pa ni (Ateneo) coach Tai (Bundit). And sabi rin ng mga doctors pahinga raw muna,” she told a handful of sportswriters while watching her teammates play.

But the charming 22-year old pride of San Juan, Batangas insisted there’s nothing to worry about.

Valdez stressed the decision to take a break was made after a long, gruelling stretch that saw her see action in the UAAP, the Asean University Games last December, the Asian Under-23 championship last May and the Southeast Asian Games a month ago.

“Dire-diretso kasi mula sa UAAP, Under 23, SEA Games, so pahinga muna ngayon,” she said.

But Valdez is nonetheless enjoying her time as a spectator.

“’Yung kids (rookies) muna ang bahala enjoy ko muna panoorin mga teammates ko,” she said.
