PHILIPPINE Army went through the wringer against Cagayan Valley before pulling off a 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10 victory in the Shakey’s V League Open Conference on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Lady Troopers recovered from their sluggish start and suffered another mid-match wobble before finally taking control with a telling 6-2 run in the final set.

“Dumaan kami sa butas ng karayom,” said Army coach Rico de Guzman after Army's third successive victory. “Medyo nahirapan kami sa unang set, mabigat yung umpisa namin.”

Rachel Anne Daquis finished with 16 points built around 13 kills and three service aces to lead Army. Carolino sisters Michelle and Mayeth added 16 and 15, respectively, while Joanne Bunag and Jaqueline Alarca each added 11.

The Rising Suns dominated the Lady Troopers with a nine-point spurt to open a 19-9 lead but Army charged back with its own 9-3 swing to stay within four, 19-23.

Joy Cases and Kunbang Pornpimol went for back-to-back kills to seal it for the Rising Suns.

“Noong fourth set medyo naramdaman na namin yung pagod. Sabi ko sa kanila matalo na tayo dito (fourth set) babawi tayo sa fifth," said de Guzman.

"Mag-focus lang tayo sa blocking at floor defense hindi na sila makakapalo,” he added.

    Cagayan Valley fell to 1-2.
