ROOKIE Cherry Rondina showed the way as University of Santo Tomas scored its third consecutive win and dealt National University its second straight loss, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, on Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The 5-foot-5 Cebuana had a game-high 15 points from 12 spikes two blocks and one service ace as UST scored its fourth win in nine matches. That moved the Tigresses into a share of third place with the NU, UP and FEU.
“Si Cherry kasi pag isang-patay-isang-mali ang laro niya off siya niyan, pero kapag tuluy-tuloy, series of points, unstoppable siya,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.
UST needed an hour and 25 minutes to take the match, adding NU to its list of victims after four-set wins over Adamson and FEU.
“Ito na ’yung list ng babawian, check, check, check,” said Mamon.
“Kailangan eh para makapasok kami sa Final Four pero we take one game at a time,” added Mamon, looking to return to the semifinals after falling short the past two seasons.
UST skipper Pam Lastimosa and Mela Tunay each had eight points, while Ria Meneses added six markers. Rookie sensation EJ Laure, the former juniors MVP, had six points after scoring 19 against FEU.
Jaja Santiago scored 14 for NU, which suffered back-to-back three-set losses. They bowed to defending champion and new NU coach Roger Gorayeb’s former team Ateneo on Sunday.
