UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas recovered from a morning misstep to turn back Far Eastern University, 21-17, 21-10, and claim the women’s title in the UAAP Season 79 beach volleyball tournament on Sunday at SM Sands by the Bay.
UST’s Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez failed to put away FEU’s Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza in the morning match but were in total control in the decider of the best-of-three series.
Rondina and Gutierrez won the first match in straight sets on Saturday but Pons and Atienza extended the series with a three-set victory on Sunday morning.

“Sobrang saya ko po kasi parang nakabawi po kami,” said Rondina.
“’Yung inisip ko talaga na kinakailangan makuha namin ito and naging inspirasyon namin nag-champion ’yung men’s team namin.”
It was a big win for the 2014 winners, who slumped to a fifth place finish last year.
“‘Yung last season kasi wala na ’yun eh, another chapter na naman and ’yun nga sabi noong nag-training kami, sinabi ni coach na ito ang libro natin ngayon panibagong libro,” said Rondina.
