ATENEO faces University of Sto. Tomas in a battle of streaking teams on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The leaggue-leading Lady Eagles are coming off a straight-sets win over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons and now look to stretch the winning run to seven.
The Tigresses, on the other hand, are on a four-match winning streak after 1-3 start in the season.
The match starts at 4 p.m.
Ateneo scored a quick three-set win over UST in the opening round and, with a 7-1 win-loss record, need only two more wins to secure at least a playoff for a semifinal spot.
Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses says a huge factor in their run is the focus on matches and not on streaks and standings.
"Team effort ang nangyayari. Mataas ang confidence ngayon ng mga bata. Kapag naglalaro, parang walang standing ang iniisip ng mga bata,” he said.
Meanwhile, UST coach Kungfu Reyes is confident the EJ Laure-led Tigresses, with a newfound confidence, can even things with the Lady Eagles.
“Nagbubunga na ang mga pinaghihirapan namin, ’yung pagiging optimistic namin, nagiging reality na,” said Tigresses coach Kungfu Reyes.
The Tigresses captained by Cherry Rondina also had a good second group led returning skipper Pam Lastimosa, Mary Dominique Pacres and Christine Francisco.
“Talagang malaki ang pagbabago ng team, nagstart na sila mag-usap, ‘yung oxygen sa muscle pumapasok na, ’wag lang pasukan ng hangin ang utak magkakaproblema kami dyan,” he said. “Basta magloosen up lang sila, mag-enjoy, kasi natututo kami sa mga kalaban namin.”
University of the Philippines looks to end a four-match skid when it takes on lowly University of the East in the 2 p.m. match.
The Lady Maroons are now in sixth at 4-4 after a brief stay on top but are hoping to start the climb back to the top half of the standings as they battle the Lady Warriors, who have only one win to show in eight outings.
UP needed only three sets to stop UE in the first round.
