COACH Odjie Mamon is hoping University of Sto. Tomas can do much better after falling short in the Premier Volleyball League as the Tiger Spikers try to defend their title in the University Games in Dumaguete.
Mamon was disappointed with the wasted chance in the PVL as the Tiger Spikers bowed to National University Bulldogs. He said they cannot afford to relax in the Unigames Dumaguete from October 21 to 28 as they prepare for the ultimate goal of winning the UAAP.
“Kailangan idefend namin ang crown namin actually bukod doon siyempre hindi yun yung main goal namin, ultimately, ‘yung UAAP talaga,” he said.
“Andyan na ‘yung opportunity kaya lang hindi nila grinab,” he said. “Although wala kaming expectations, pero sabi ko sa kanila since we’re here already give it all your best kumbaga may nadaanan ka ng puno pitasin mo na ‘yung prutas eh ayaw.”
“‘Yung sa goal namin na pagsali dito we have achieved it. Kaya lang kailangan pa rin ‘yung iniinstill ko sa players ko na pwedeng magoverachieve, don’t be so modest and humble na kailangan low profile,” he added.
NU, Adamson, Arellano, St. Benilde, La Salle and Perpetual Help will also see action in Dumaguete, aside from other teams, and Mamon the UST squad led by Manuel Medina, Jayvee Sumagaysay, Joshua Umandal, Timmy Tajanlangit and rookie Genesis Redido can play better and retain the title.
“Kailangan din matuto sa talo natakot nga ako nung we had an 8-0 record kaya lang naman bakit naman parang tuloy tuloy dikit dikit yung talo namin,” he said. “Tapos di kami nanalo sa team na ito (NU) niisang beses the best we had four sets four sets lang.”
“We have a few months before UAAP hopefully hindi lang ‘yung skills nila ‘yung (maimprove) pati rin yung mindset nila so makakuha sana ako ng magaling na sports psychologist kasi hindi na pwedeng physical at skills lang kailangan meron na rin ito (utak),” the UST coach said.
“Kailangan mai-continue namin yung momentum namin na hindi yung pashoot sa taas agad. Proggessive lang. Madadagdagan pa naman kami, may players pa na papasok. Hopefully his addition mas mabuo pa yung team, maging competitive pa,” he concluded.
