UNIVERSITY of the Philippines ended its 16-game losing skid after it escaped University of the East 25-18, 25-15, 18-25, 25-27, 15-6 on Sunday in the 75th UAAP season women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Maroons, eighth in last year’s tournament, looked set for an unusually easy match as they handily won the first two sets.

But the Lady Warriors clawed back to take the next two before losing steam in the final set as the Maroons played steadier.

Junior player Princess Mae Se hit the final attack to seal the first victory for UP in two years.

“First win in two years, medyo mahirap pero nakakatuwa kasi very determined mga bata,” said UP coach Jarod Hubalde.

“Half ng team rookie, dito makikita na very promising ang mga rookies at very motivated.”

Se led the Lady Maroons with 14 points on 11 attacks and three service aces. Jay Aliyah Ong and Liezchel chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.
