TOTS Carlos made an impressive comeback providing the big blows as University of the Philippines beat University of the East, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 31-29, on Saturday in the 2018 Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Out six months due to stress fracture on her shin, Carlos scored 17 points to lead the Lady Maroons in edging the Lady Red Warriors in a one-hour and 50-minute match.
The UP skipper nailed 11 kills, five blocks and an ace and made 14 excellent digs out of 20 attempts.
Second stringer Jessma Ramos chipped in 10 points, while middle blocker Aie Gannaban, added eight markers, including the match-ending hit.
UP coach Godfrey Okumu, however, was not too pleased with the Lady Maroons’ performance. The fourth set took six deuces before Justine Dorog and Gannaban nailed the winning hits.
"Today's game, it's a start. We won struggling," said Okumu. "I would say there was no smooth flow to the game; every touch on the ball was a struggle. But, a win is a win. There are a lot of things we can build on from this game."
Meann Mendrez scored 16 and Judith Abil added 13 for UE.
Libero Kath Arado had 30 digs and 23 excellent receptions.
UP faces Colegio San Agustin-Biñan on next week at Alonte Sports Arena, while UE will take a long break and return to action on November 24 against De La Salle Dasmariñas at the Caloocan Sports Complex.
