UNIVERSITY of the Philippines defeated University of the East, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19, on Saturday for its second win in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Diana Carlos scored 18 points, Marian Buitre came up with 14 and Nicole Tiamzon added 10.
“Yun ang hinahanap ng mga coaches eh, medyo may pressure ng kaunti and nag respond ‘yung mga bata so (I’m) very happy,” said UP coach Jerry Yee.
The Lady Maroons trailed, 20-23, before Diana Carlos bailed UP out of danger in the second set.
UP again fell behind in the third, 0-4 before taking charge 7-6.
UE countered with a 7-2 run to get to within three, 15-18, but UP held on to join National University at the top at 2-0.
The Lady Warriors are winless in two matches.
The Lady Maroons outworked the Lady Warriors in terms of attacks (42-18) but UE had 11 kill blocks compared to three by UP in the one-hour and 15-minutes match.
Yee said he expected UE to dominate the blocking department.
“Ganoon talaga eh, hindi tayo nabiyayaan ng height,” said Yee. “Kumbaga law of averages, ‘yun ang lamang sa blocking mahirap para sa smaller players na mag-block.”
UE team captain Shaya Adorador and Mary Anne Mendrez scored eight points apiece, while Judith Abil and Seth Rodriguez each added seven.
