UNIVERSITY of the Philippines kicked off its campaign in the UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament with an emphatic 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 win over Adamson at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
The Lady Maroons, coming off a Final Four appearance last season, showed impressive form as they joined Ateneo and National University among the winners on opening weekend.
The UP spikers surprisingly got their way against an Lady Falcons side that went on a top-to-bottom rebuilding in the offseason beginning with the appointment of American coach Airess Padda.
Graduating middle blocker Kathy Bersola fired 11 points while sophomores Diana Carlos and Isa Molde added 11 and 10 markers apiece for the Lady Maroons.
While pleased with the win, UP coach Jerry Yee admitted there are still some lapses that could have been avoided had his players only maintained their focus.
Yee also said the Adamson match can't be a reliable gauge of the team's readiness to contend for a championship this season.
“(We) need improvement, hindi magandang test eh kasi bago ang kalaban,” he said. “May mga miscues pa rin tayo at saka ‘yung mga usual mistakes natin nandyan pa rin.”
“Happy of course, a win is a win, straight sets masaya tayo, ‘yun lang (sa third set) ang mga lapses natin, nagrerelax tayo eh hindi pwede ‘yun kapag beterano ang team na kalaban,” he added.
Bernadette Flora finished with nine points for Adamson, while skipper Jema Galanza added six.
