UNIVERSITY of the Philippines recorded its first back-to-back wins of the season as it downed National University, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons, coming off a four-set win over University of Santo Tomas, improved their win-loss record to 4-3 to gain a share of third spot with idle Far Eastern University.
NU absorbed its third straight loss and now hold a 3-4 win-loss record at fifth spot.
Rookies Isa Molde and Diana Carlos combined for 25 points, while veteran spiker Nicole Tiamzon added 13 markers for UP.
Coach Gerry Yee was glad to see the Lady Maroons get a win run going, but noted the Lady Bulldogs played well below their capabilities, with nobody able to take charge as Myla Pablo and Jaja Santiago struggled.
“First and foremost, it was more NU than UP, medyo nawala sila, nilabas ang veterans that’s why. We are happy with the win and we know we are still long way to go in improvement. O, game, kayo naman” said Yee even before the reporters throw questions during the post-game interview.
“Parang wala sa huwisyo pumalo ang kalaban. I’m not taking away the credit from the girls, talagang they worked hard. Pero mayroon pang ilalaro ’yung NU eh, so ‘yun lang,” he added.
“Gusto namin sumabay sa bandwagon kumbaga, makasabit man lang kami sa ride kasi slump sila eh baka sa amin pa magising, malas naman naming.”
NU coach Roger Gorayeb pulled out Pablo and Santiago in the second set and sent them back late in the third set.
Sophomore Jorelle Singh delivered 16 points from 14 attacks, one block and one service ace. Santiago wound up with just four points and Pablo finished with three, their lowest output in the tournament.
