UNIVERSITY of the Philippines and Adamson try to check their two-game slide in a key UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball match on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
The winner of the Lady Maroons-Lady Falcons match scheduled at 4 p.m. will move up to joint fourth place behind unbeaten defending two-time champion Ateneo, National University and De La Salle.
Far Eastern University is currently in solo fourth with an even 2-2 card.
Winless squads University of Santo Tomas and University of the East seek to avoid falling deeper into the cellar in the curtain raiser at 2 p.m.
After winning their respective season openers, UP and Adamson University lost two straight to crash to the bottom four.
One of the pre-season favorites with a mix of veterans and promising rookies, the Lady Maroons bowed to the Lady Spikers, 14-25, 13-25, 25-19, 20-25, and dropped a 19-25, 21-25, 21-25 decision to the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Falcons lost to the Lady Bulldogs, 25-17, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25, and were overwhelmed by the Lady Spikers, 13-25, 13-25, 16-25.
Rookies Diana Carlos, Isa Molde and Justine Dorog hope to produce the needed numbers for UP alongside with veterans Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon as setter Jewel Lai continues to grope for form.
Lai was a non-factor in the past two games, forcing the Lady Maroons to sacrifice Tiamzon’s offense and turn her into a playmaker to get them going.
After a solid start, Adamson’s main hitters Mylene Paat and Jema Galanza floundered, combining for only nine points against De La Salle.
With Paat and Galanza out of sync, rookie May Roque was the only consistent Lady Falcon in the last two outings.
In the men’s division, NU takes on UST at 10 a.m., right after the De La Salle-UP tussle at 8 a.m.
