UNIVERSITY of the Philippines roared back from two sets down to beat University of the East, 14-25 19-25 25-20 25-12 15-12, on Sunday for only their second win in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons shut the door on the Lady Warriors’ bid for their first victory of the season in come-from-behind fashion to improve their mark to 2-11.
Nicole Tiamzon led the way for the Lady Maroons with 17 points, while Jay Aliyah Ong added 14 points. Katherine Bersola came through on defense with five of her 13 points on blocks.
The Lady Warriors remained winless with one game remaining in the season.
In the men’s division, National University swept UP, 27-25 25-18 25-22, to remain in solo first place with a 12-1 card.
NU’s closest pursuer Far Eastern University, meanwhile, absorbed a 20-25 25-21 25-20 20-25 15-12 loss to Final Four seeking Adamson to drop to a 10-2 win-loss record.
Peter Torres finished with 12 points for the Bulldogs while Rueben Inaudito added 12 including the winning kill in the third set.
Karl Dela Calzada had 20 points for the Falcons to stave off the 21 and 20-point outputs of Tamaraw spikers Ron Jay Galang and Armando Maleon.
The Falcons improved to 8-5 as they moved to third place ahead of De La Salle (7-5) and University of Santo Tomas (7-6).
The Maroons dropped to 2-10.
