UNIVERSITY of the Philippines downed winless University of the East, 25-16, 25-21, 25-18, at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday to end its campaign in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament on a bright note.
While UP ended its stint with back-to-back wins for a 3-11 win-loss record, UE suffered a winless season.
The Diliman-based spikers stunned Far Eastern University, 26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, last week.
"Masaya syempre," said UP coach Gerry Yee. "Importante para sa amin any win we can get, kaya kukunin namin 'to. Madadala pa namin to for the following season para sa konting momentum."
Team captain Angeli Araneta poured in 15 points for the Lady Fighting Maroons, while Katherine Bersola, Alyssa Layug and Monica Ortiz combined for 21 points.
"Kahit papano improvement from last year," said Yee. "Ang target namin is not to be worse than last year (2-12)."
Shaya Adorador and Faith Bulan came up with 13 and 12 markers respectively for UE.
"It's more on psychological factor. Not the skill, not the play," said UE coach Boy Dalistan. "Kakailanganin lang maniwala na kaya nila. Actually kaya naman minsan lang natitigilan di pa kaya ang pressure."
