Coach Godfrey Okumu expected a quick win but still pleased as UP survives five-set scare

    Feb 4, 2018

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines coach Godfrey Okumu expected to score a quick win on opening day, but says he is still glad with the tough five-setter against University of the East.

The Lady Maroons looked well on the way to a rout of the Lady Warriors only to slip before gathering enough energy to salvage the win on Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

“The environment might have played a part, but I don't blame it on the environment, because this is the same environment we'll be using every time we come around here,” said the Kenyan coach.

“The second set was easy, we just won, hands down. And I thought, I'd say the same thing to my players, come on, it's not over, let's push. But it's just another day in the office, sometimes that's how things goes,” he added.

“You expect to win 3-0, but we won 3-2. It's still a good win, it's a good start for my team and I'm very happy. I'm proud of the way my team played tonight,” he said.

Okumu, tapped in November to replace Jerry Yee, admitted the Lady Maroons are far from their top form.

“We're still working on it, it will take time,” he said.

UP will face back-to-back defending champion La Salle on Saturday.
