UNIVERSITY of the Philippines bucked a slow start before beating Emilio Aguinaldo College, 23 -25, 29-27, 25 -19, 25-18, on Saturday in the Spikers’ Turf Collegiate Conference opener at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Alfred Valbuena led the Fighting Maroons with 16 points, 15 from attacks, while Wendel Miguel added 14 points.
“First game namin talagang medyo nangangapa pa kami. Hinahanap pa namin, hinahanap pa nila ‘yung rhythm nila,” UP assistant coach Melchor Santos said.
“Nasa loading pa kami ngayon kaya mabigat pa ang mga bata,” he added.
As he holds a concurrent job as head coach of UP and EAC, Rodrigo Palmero didn’t show up for the match.
“Hindi muna pumunta kasi dalawa hawak niya,” Santos said.
Israel Encisa had 24 points, while Kerth Melliza scored 17 for the Generals.
The Fighting Maroons face National College of Business and the Arts on August 8, while the Generals take on the Blue Eagles on August 6 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
