NATIONAL University hopes to close in on undefeated defending champion La Salle when it takes on University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Bulldogs are fancied in the 4 p.m. encounter, although UST coach Odjie Mamon said the Lady Tigresses are out to give them a tough battle in the tournament’s final game prior to the holiday break.
“We wanted to enter the Christmas break with a good feeling,” said Mamon.
Looking to win for the second time in a row, NU is currently in second place with a 3-1 card, just behind the perfect 4-0 record of La Salle, the only remaining unbeaten team in the meet.
UST is tied with Ateneo for the third and fourth spots, with identical 2-1 (win-loss) slates.
The Santiago siblings – Dindin and Jaja – are again expected to take charge for the Lady Bulldogs after combining for 32 points in their win against Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles are eyeing to book a third straight win in their 2 p.m. match-up with the University of the East Lady Warriors.
Ateneo has won its last three outings after losing to NU in its season opener, although star player Alyssa Valdez has been slowed down by minor injuries.
