ATENEO and National University collide in a matchup of unbeaten teams on Sunday in the 10th Shakey's V-League First Conference at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Bulldogs, both with 4-0 records, clash at 4 p.m. in what Ateneo guest player Rachel Daquis considers a preview of the title match.
"Yung laban namin sa NU, yun ang battle of the champions kumbaga," said Daquis.
The Katipunan-based squad will again hope to get big numbers from Daquis as well as team regulars Alyssa Valdez, Jem Ferrer and Fille Cainglet.
But Daquis noted that have to do better than the past games.
"Kailangan namin taasan yung intensity namin sa practice para makasabay kami sa kanila,” she said.
The towering sisters of Dindin and Jaja Santiago together with Myla Pablo, Cai Nepomuceno and rookie Aiko Urdas will lead the Lady Bulldogs in their quest for a 2-0 record in the quarterfinals.
Teams’ wins and losses against groupmates in the first stage of the eliminations reflect on the quarterfinal standings, thus Ateneo and NU enter the quarterfinals already with 1-0 win-loss records because of their wins against La Salle-Damariñas and Perpetual Help, respectively.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas battle Adamson University in the curtain-raiser.
Coach Odjie Mamon admits the Tigresses haven’t been playing smoothly but he believes they have made the necessary adjustments.
"We are in a good group. Nagdi-jell na ang team at maganda na ang blocking namin. But our open spikers need to have higher attack rates dahil predictable masyado ang mga palo nila," said Mamon, who hopes to get the best from former league MVP Aiza Maizo and setter Rhea Dimaculangan, and regular players Pam Lastimosa, Carmela Tunay and Maika Ortiz.
Adamson, which started the quarterfinals with a win over San Sebastian, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 on Thursday, has the momentum entering the 2 p.m. match.
Guest player Angela Benting, who produced 21 points, will again lead the Lady Falcons, while Bhebs Pineda and Pau Soriano will provide the added boost.
Sunday’s results will also determine the fate of San Sebastian and Arellano, both 0-2 in their respective groups.
If the Tigresses win over the Lady Falcons, the Lady Stags (0-2) will be eliminated from the playoffs. A win by NU over the Lady Eagles would also send the Lady Chiefs to the exit.
