GILLIGAN'S claimed solo first place in the men's division of the Philippine Superliga men's division after outlasting PLDT MyDSL, 28-26, 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-8, on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Former University of Santo Tomas stars John Depante and JP Torres made 19 and 17 points for the Sisig Kings, who rallied from a one-set deficit then never looked back in the deciding fifth set.
Ronald Tonquin and Edjet Mabbayad added 14 and 12, respectively, for Gilligan's, which now sports a 2-0 (win-loss) record after dealing PLDT its first loss in two games.
"Actually tinake advantage namin ang height ni JP kasi kayang kaya niya 'yung blockers," said Giligan's coach Frank Mauricio, adding his team looked tired after making its league debut just two days earlier.
"Pagod kami sa first three sets, galing kasi kami sa laro noong Wednesday tapos medyo tight pa 'yung muscles nila. Buti nakapag-adjust kami after ko ipahinga si Torres," he added.
From a 5-3 count in the final set, the Sisig Kings wrapped up the marathon match by taking nine of the next 10 points.
Armando Maleon finished with 17 points while Kheeno Franco and Henry Pacana added 16 and 11 for the Speed Boosters.
