UNIVERSITY of the East scored its first back-to-back wins in six years, beating University of Sto. Tomas, 25-23, 18-25, 28-26, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Mary Ann Mendrez led UE with 21 points, Shaya Adorador added 15, Judith Abil and Seth Rodriguez each had 10 markers, while libero Kath Arado registered 28 digs and 32 excellent receptions.
The Lady Warriors scored a huge follow-up to its five-set upset over Adamson, making it two straight wins under athletic director Rod Roque, who took over two weeks ago after the departure of Francis Vicente.
The Lady Warriors’ last back-to-back win was over University of the Philippines at the end of the first round and at the start of the second round in Season 74.
“Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm kasi 'yung mga pinaghihirapan namin, hindi lang individual, as a team din, ’yung pinaghihirapan namin sa training, lalo na ngayon, on-going 'yung ano namin, finals (academics),” said Arado.
“So 'yung sacrifice na nangyayari sa amin individual, napupunan na at nakikita na sa game. Tapos nananalo na kami, so ang saya sa feeling,” she added.
UE also scored its first win over UST in the Final Four era, which started in 1994.
The Lady Warriors improved to 2-6, tied with the Tigresses, who absorbed its fourth straight loss.
“Sobrang worth it po, sobra-sobrang worth it na lahat ng pagod na ginagawa namin sa training, sa game. Parang hindi mo na maiinda ‘yung mga sakit sa katawan, mga injury. Kasi wala eh, ang saya,” said Arado.
“Nakikita mong naghihirap din ang teammates mo para lang mapuntos ang bola, kaya sobrang saya,” she added.
The Lady Warriors actually scored less on spikes, 46-63, but had 12 total rejections compared to just two by the Tigresses.
Sisi Rondina had 25 points and 19 digs for the Tigresses, Dimdim Pacres added 18 and Tin Francisco had 10.
UST squandered a 24-20 lead in the third set and a 24-22 lead in the fourth set.
