FRANCIS Vicente and Sammy Acaylar stepped down as coaches of University of the East's women’s and men’s volleyball coaches, respectively, midway through the UAAP Season 80, sources bared on Friday.
Vicente, who is also the national coach, had a 2-42 win-loss record in three seasons at UE and the Lady Warriors were mired at the bottom (0-5) when news of his resignation leaked.
Meanwhile, Acaylar, who replaced Ruel Pascual this season, confirmed he resigned on Friday morning because he can no longer fully commit to to his duties with the Red Warriors.
Aside from the UE job, Acaylar is also the head coach of the University of Perpetual Help men’s volleyball team, the UPH athletic director, and coach of the men’s national team.
“Yes, that’s true, I resigned just this morning,” Acaylar said a day after his successful title run with the Altas in the NCAA.
“I don’t want to be unfair to UE, honestly hindi ako nakakapunta sa practice kasi I was very busy din sa Perpetual Help and then when the UE coaching job was offered hindi pa ako (athletic) director,” he added.
The Red Warriors are winless in five outings under Acaylar this season.
UE athletic director Rod Roque will be the interim coach for both women’ and men’s volleyball team until the school finds replacements for Vicente and Acaylar.
