ATENEO guns for the first Final Four berth when it squares off with University of the Philippines in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Still unbeaten in nine matches, the Lady Eagles need one more win to book their sixth straight semifinals appearance.
But facing a Kathy Bersola-less UP side in the 2 p.m. encounter won’t be easy, says Ateneo team captain Alyssa Valdez.
The Lady Eagles’ top spiker believes Lady Maroons coach Gerry Yee has made the needed adjustments to fill the void left by Bersola, who is out for the remainder of the tournament owing to an ACL injury.
“Ang UP paghahandaan namin, we’re going to train for them,” said Valdez. “Kahit wala naman si Kathy I know si coach Gerry for sure may mga adjustments siya. Malaking kawalan din kasi ‘yung blocking niya.”
Valdez still expects a tough fight from UP after the Lady Eagles were dragged by the Diliman-based spikers to a thrilling five-setter, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11, during their first round encounter.
Meanwhile, La Salle and National University tangle in the second game at 4p.m.
The Lady Spikers (8-1) are gunning for their third consecutive win, while the Lady Bulldogs (4-5) are looking to snap their own two-game losing slide under new coach Roger Gorayeb.
NU is currently in a four-way logjam with UP, Far Eastern University, and University of Santo Tomas.
