Tensions rise late in FEU's four-set triumph over La Salle

A late kerfuffle unraveled in the fourth set of Far Eastern University’s breakthrough win over La Salle to end their respective UAAP Season 87 elimination round campaigns.

In the tail-end of the fourth set, the Lady Spikers made a late substitution to replace opposite hitter Shevana Laput with Baby Jyne Soreno to serve.

Confusion on the sidelines led to a rotation fault call on La Salle.

A lengthy pause then ensued, as Angel Canino and coach Ramil de Jesus argued for the substitution the team made just in time before Soreno’s service was made.

It would result in the point being replayed — one that would then spark furor on the Lady Tamaraws’ end.

At the end of it all, the point was replayed and La Salle picked up a clutch point before FEU ran away with the victory in four sets through a heroic 19-piece from mainstay winger Gerz Petallo.

When asked about the confusing sequence, Lady Tams' shot-caller Tina Salak refused to go into detail on the officiating technicalities and just shrugged the fiasco off.

What happens on the court stays on the court

Heated as that sequence - and the match altogether - might’ve been, it was nothing but respect and admiration between the two champion schools away from the court.

After finishing her media duties, Salak crossed paths with de Jesus at the hallway leading to the Big Dome exits just as the Lady Spikers were about to leave.

There were exchanges of laughter, praises, and pleasantries between two longstanding pillars of Philippine volleyball after yet another highly-contested duel.

In the next few weeks, Salak and de Jesus are out to carve their own paths to championship glory in the Final Four starting Saturday, May 3.
