UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas matched its best start ever in UAAP women’s volleyball with its sixth straight win at the expense of winless University of the Philippines, 25-22, 25-20, 26-24, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Leading scorer Angge Poyos once again stood front and center for the Tigresses with 22 points on 18 attacks and four aces with seven digs and seven receptions.

The last time the Tigresses achieved such a feat was 14 years ago back in UAAP Season 73 when the likes of decorated aces Aiza Maizo and Rhea Dimaculangan led UST to a runner-up finish against La Salle.
"Reminder lang sa akin ni Coach (Kungfu Reyes) nung crucial [stretch ng game], mind over matter kasi nga nahuli na ako. Halos sa aming lahat, huli na ng blockings. Ginawan lang namin ng paraan every set and thankful pa rin kasi nakuha namin yung panalo," said Poyos.
Despite a historic sixth win, Poyos rued the huge blocking discrepancy between UST and UP — 10 to one in favor of the Fighting Maroons without reigning second best middle blocker Niña Ytang.
But what Poyos & Co. lost on net defense, they more than made up for on offense with 52 attack points and on floor defense with 41 digs and 29 receptions in the one-hour, 44-minute straight-sets shutout.
Only the 2-3 (win-loss) Adamson Lady Falcons stand in the way of a historic first-round sweep for UST, which will give the Tigresses a perfect 7-0 record and the solo lead in the team standings over the likes of back-to-back finalists La Salle and National University should they get the job done on Saturday.
