BABYLOVE Barbon and Gen Eslapor opened University of Santo Tomas’ bid for a fourth straight UAAP women’s beach volleyball title with a 21-11, 21-6 victory over University of the Philippines’ Rosie Rosier and Euricka Eslapor on Sunday at Sands SM By The Bay.
Barbon, last year’s top rookie who won the title with Sisi Rondina, is glad to start the tournament on a bright note but said there is much work to do.
Barbon and Eslapor are confident they have had enough matches together after seeing action in the offseason, including the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 1-Star in Boracay in May.
“Kung ano ang experience na nakuha namin sa mga off-season leagues, yun ang ina-apply namin," she said.
Last season’s runner-up La Salle also had a solid start, beating National University.
Tin Tiamzon, with new partner Justine Jazareno, dominated Andrea Abian and Chlea dela Fuente, 21-11, 21-4.
Far Eastern University and Adamson scored three-set victories.
FEU rookie Sheila Mae Kiseo played through cramps late in the third set as she and Sheena Gallentes beat Ateneo’s Ponggay Gaston and newbie Roma Mae Doromal, 22-20, 17-21, 15-12.
Adamson's Kring Uy and Chen Ave bucked a slow start to beat University of the East's Lyen Ritual and returning Juliet Catindig, 13-21, 21-13, 15-7, in the last match of the women’s division opener.
The action resumes on Wednesday with all teams playing two matches each.
