IT had been a familiar - though arguably harsher - narrative for University of the East over the past year.
In the aftermath of losing its California Academy (CAL) core bannered by Casiey Dongallo, there was guarded optimism that UAAP Season 87 could serve as a reset for the Lady Warriors.
Instead, the campaign unraveled quickly and completely.

The red-and-white spiraled to a winless campaign, with now-ZUS Coffee ace Riza Nogales, Khy Cepada, Van Bangayan, and Angge Reyes among the few constants in an otherwise overmatched lineup.
What was initially framed as a rebuilding year turned into a full-scale collapse, as the program endured its first full season zero-win showing in 10 years.
Allan Mendoza, in his first year as head coach following an interim role in Season 86, struggled to stabilize a young roster and translate effort into results, leaving UE without a clear sense of direction by season’s end.
But wait, there's more
The turbulence didn’t stop when the season did.
In the weeks after the season, Recto was rocked by a mass exodus that saw all but a handful of players exit the program following a school-initiated team tryout.
Cepada and Reyes were among the few retained.

Multiple factors contributed to the exodus, such as sponsorship uncertainty, limited athletic scholarships, financial constraints, and a shift in program philosophy.
Compounding matters were reported disagreements that had Mendoza and former head coach Obet Vital clash with school officials regarding the team's coaching succession after the latter's move to the University of the Philippines.
UE dawn
Now tasked with steering Lady Warriors forward is Jumbo Dimaculangan, returning to Recto after previously handling the program in Seasons 84 and 85 before Strong Group Athletics took over.
Since then, Dimaculangan has spent much of his time on the Alas Pilipinas bench, experience that could prove valuable for a program desperate for structure and stability.

His return signals yet another reset built around a small group of holdovers, complemented by an influx of new faces.
Immediate success may be unrealistic, but for UE, Season 88 represents something just as important: a chance to finally move past the chaos, rebuild with clarity, and lay the groundwork for a sustainable program.
This time, they hope it will be one free from off-court complications that have, time and again, held back progress on it.
