THIS season is about to get wilder.
Unpredictability could define the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament, with a level of competition fiercer than in recent years setting the stage for an all-out battle for supremacy.
Trying to predict the pecking order is almost a futile exercise. For the first time in over a decade, the league could open without a clear-cut, runaway title favorite.
What fuels the frenzy is the crowded field of championship contenders. A two-time champion begins a new chapter without familiar faces, rebooted challengers look ready to rise again and battle-tested underdogs are out to shake up the order.
Here is SPIN.ph's Hail Mary of a fearless forecast of one of many possible scenarios for this season’s women’s volleyball tournament.
1) La Salle Lady Spikers
La Salle looks primed to reclaim the crown behind a loaded core and proven championship leadership.
The trio of Angel Canino, Shevana Laput, and Amie Provido gives the Lady Spikers the most balanced star power in the league with scoring, size, and defensive presence all in one package.
With reigning best libero Lyka de Leon anchoring the floor, DLSU arguably has the most complete backbone among all contenders.
The biggest concern remains youth, particularly in key supporting roles and the setter position.
But under Ramil de Jesus, young players usually grow into their roles quickly, and the program’s culture often brings out the best in inexperienced talent as the season progresses.
Early bumps are possible, but La Salle typically peaks when it matters.
If their young pieces hold steady, the Lady Spikers’ ceiling is simply higher than everyone else’s. That combination of star power and system stability should be enough to bring the title back to Taft.
2) National U Lady Bulldogs
NU may have lost Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, but writing off the defending champions would be premature.
The Lady Bulldogs still have a strong system, a winning culture, and veteran leadership that keeps them firmly in the title hunt.
Vange Alinsug is expected to step up as NU’s primary scoring option, while juniors standout Sam Cantada could quickly emerge as the next big star in the program.
With veterans like Lams Lamina steering the offense and a deep supporting cast around them, NU still has the pieces to contend.
That said, replacing the late-game dominance of Belen and Solomon is easier said than done. NU remains dangerous, but its margin for error is slimmer and could spell the difference in tight matches against La Salle.
3) UST Golden Tigresses
UST continues to inch closer to another breakthrough season.
With Angge Poyos developing into one of the league’s most reliable scorers and the return of Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula, the Golden Tigresses have the firepower to challenge anyone on a given day.
The core of Reg Jurado, Cassie Carballo, and Detdet Pepito gives UST stability and familiarity in Shaq delos Santos’ system.
Their attacking depth and improved lineup make them a legitimate threat to the traditional powers.
Still, consistency remains the key question.
UST has the talent to push the top teams but has yet to show it can sustain that level over an entire campaign.
A Final Four finish feels likely, but breaking into the top two may still be a step away.
4) Adamson Lady Falcons
Adamson shapes up as the league’s biggest darkhorse, largely because of Shaina Nitura.
After a record-breaking rookie season, she looks ready to take another leap and carry the Lady Falcons’ offense.
Support from Frances Mordi and Fhei Sagaysay, along with reinforcements Lhouriz Tuddao and Althea Aposaga, gives Adamson more balance than in previous years.
The team’s athleticism and energy should help them stay competitive against most opponents, but experience and system stability still separate them from the league’s elite.
Adamson will have its moments, but inconsistency could keep the Lady Falcons just outside the championship conversation yet good enough to at least reach the Final Four.
5) FEU Lady Tamaraws
FEU remains solid and competitive, but it feels like the Lady Tamaraws are a step behind the top contenders.
The trio of Faida Bakanke, Gerz Petallo, and Jaz Ellarina continues to anchor the team, providing both scoring and structure.
However, the departures of Jean Asis and Chenie Tagaod leave noticeable gaps, especially in leadership and offensive production.
FEU’s discipline and system will keep them in games, but they may struggle to match the firepower of higher-ranked teams.
They should remain competitive throughout the season, but cracking the top four will require major improvement from their supporting cast.
6) UP Fighting Maroons
UP enters Season 88 as a rebuilding team with intriguing potential.
The arrival of the California Academy group led by Casiey Dongallo gives the Fighting Maroons fresh energy and additional scoring options.
Veterans Niña Ytang, Irah Jaboneta, and Joan Monares provide a steady foundation, giving UP a more competitive lineup than in recent seasons.
Hence, the pieces are there for occasional upsets but still, chemistry and cohesion will take time.
While UP looks improved, but consistency may remain elusive as the program continues its rebuilding process.
7) Ateneo Blue Eagles
Ateneo remains in transition, with a young roster still searching for identity and consistency.
The Blue Eagles have promising pieces, but they lack the scoring depth and experience needed to consistently challenge stronger teams.
This season appears to be more about development than immediate results.
Growth from their young core could bring occasional surprises, but sustained competitiveness against the top squads will be difficult.
Season 88 should serve as a stepping stone for Ateneo’s long-term rebuild.
8) UE Lady Red Warriors
UE faces another uphill climb despite bringing in new faces to reshape the program.
While the Lady Warriors are clearly trying to rebuild, the gap in experience and talent compared to the rest of the field remains wide.
Roster turnover and system adjustments may lead to more growing pains this season.
The focus will likely be on development and establishing a stronger foundation for the future.
Progress may come gradually, but a significant jump in the standings appears unlikely for now.
