FAR Eastern University restored order in what has been a shaky start to the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Tamaraws made amends from back-to-back losses at Ateneo’s expense, 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
At 2-2, FEU put an end to its losing form over the last two games and has now figured in a four-way tie for third-place with La Salle, Adamson, and the University of the Philippines.
Veteran winger Gerz Petallo willed Morayta to a hard-earned win with an 18-point, 14-reception double-double to avert what would’ve been a five-set meltdown from up two sets to one.
Sophomore winger Faida Bakanke scored three of the last four for the Lady Tamaraws in the fifth set tiebreak to cap her 15-point night.
Blocking was the name of FEU's bounce-back game, as it tallied a season-high total of 20 blocks, with Mitzi Panangin taking the lion's share of the team's production with six.
"Mas mapapabilis po kasi yung game kapag may block po and mas mapapadali para sa mga nagdi-dig or nagre-receive sa likod 'pag nata-touch namin nang maayos yung block," Panangin said.
"Nung papunta pa po kami dito hanggang nasa dugout po, ang iniisip ko lang po is 'pag pinasok ako, gusto ko lang mag-contribute ako and maging proud yung mga coaches na tama po yung pinili nila na ipasok ako."
Winning flight delayed
The Blue Eagles have now lost three of their last four after taking down the Fighting Maroons in straight sets last week.
Leading the way in a strong effort yet difficult loss was team captain Lyann de Guzman with a triple-double of 23 points, 12 receptions, and 11 digs backed by Taks Fujimoto's 23 excellent sets.
Also registering a triple-double was Sobe Buena with 10 points, 12 digs, and 13 receptions.
