La Salle did a Ginebra on Saturday, but this time at the Big Dome, came out a winner courtesy of a five-set comeback against University of Santo Tomas, 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 16-14, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.
Angel Canino just wouldn't be denied, even after experiencing scary moments in the fourth set when the back of her head collided with teammate Shevana Laput's knee.
The former rookie-MVP stayed on the taraflex, however, and wound up one point shy of matching her UAAP career game with 27 points built on 24 attacks, two blocks, and one ace. She also added 13 digs and 13 receptions for yet another triple-double.
Over in the non-scoring department, Mikole Reyes converted 26 excellent sets behind top libero contender Lyka de Leon’s 23 receptions and nine digs.
Green over gold
Behind the Canino, the green-and-white halted its four-game skid to the Golden Tigresses dating back to 2023.
Two two teams' five recent matches were all decided in five sets - and for the first time, La Salle finally solved the UST puzzle.
This win also had an added kick of revenge, as the Lady Spikers made amends for their first-round loss to the Golden Tigresses that dealt coach Ramil de Jesus his worst start to a UAAP campaign in 20 years at 1-2.
At the same time, La Salle sent UST to a third defeat in a row.
Reg Jurado’s paced the Golden Tigresses 22-point, 14-dig double-double, alongside Cassie Carballo’s 27 excellent sets and Detdet Pepito’s herculean 22-dig, 21-reception defensive effort.
