MICHELLE Morente felt like a rookie again as she made her much-anticipated return to the UAAP Beach Volleyball tournament, this time as a La Salle Lady Spiker.

The former Ateneo Lady Eagles standout played her first UAAP beach volleyball game since Season 79 after completing a one-year residency, teaming up with Tin Tiamzon to beat FEU’s Marian Calinawan and Ivana Agudo, 21-14, 20-22, 15-10.

“Siyempre first-game jitters. Sinasabi ko nga parang rookie ulit ako, ganoong level kahit last playing year ko na pero alam mo yun, it’s good to be back,” said Morente after the thrilling match at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.

“At first we were shaky, it’s a good thing that we won. Pinaghirapan talaga namin ni Tin ito sa training and buti naman lumabas 'yung mga pinaghirapan namin,” she added.

The La Salle debut marked a new beginning for the opposite spiker, who admitted she almost gave up on herself after being dropped from the Lady Eagles' lineup due to academic deficiencies two years ago.

Morente is now a dean’s lister pursuing an AB Psychology degree at La Salle and she is hoping to make her return to indoor volleyball in the coming UAAP season.

The feeling is surreal, she said.

“Siyempre nung time na natanggal ako sa Ateneo, the time na I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to do actually with my life talaga that time,” she said. “Sobrang hindi ako makapaniwala kasi alam mo ‘yung I almost gave up on myself.

"But then a lot of people na nasa likod ko sobrang sumu-support sa akin na, ‘Mich kaya mo ‘yan andito lang kami para sayo,’” she said. “Alam mo ‘yun, they were really helping me get back on my feet talaga.

“Well, now they said naman I’m cleared na for UAAP so hopefully sa indoor din cleared na rin ako,” she said. “It’s up to the coaches, siyempre sabi nila pagpatuloy ko lang ‘yung grades ko and stuff like that.”

And Morente said it won't feel weird being cheered on by the “Animo La Salle” chant.

“No. No. I don’t think so because I think it’s the sport eh, the passion for the sport. Parang ako, sige I’m doing this for the sport, you know, dahil La Salle na ako of course I’m gonna Animo La Salle,” she said.
