ONE ultimate goal is embedded in the University of the East’s brewing women’s volleyball resurgence in UAAP Season 86 — to make history.
Lady Red Warriors assistant coach Obet Vital took pride in UE’s first win over Ateneo in 14 years but further set his sights on the bigger picture for the school’s fast-rising volleyball program.
UE out to make history
“In terms of the 14 years first time [to beat Ateneo], I’m very excited. The reason why we came to UE is to make history and this is part of it. The rest is gonna be a process, right? So it’s gonna take a while,” said Vital.
With only six total wins in the last six years, Vital is liking the path of the team’s ongoing rebuild — one which he hopes will continue treading in the right direction as the season rolls on.
“Sir [Rod] Roque and I talked about this, they won six games in the last six years, right? They won one last year, one the year before so we said if we win two, then we’ve already matched the last two years, so we’re making progress so that’s what we’re looking for,” Vital said.
UE faces a lot of work with new system
“If we win three, bonus na po yun. So, it’s a new system that we brought into UE. So, we’re working really hard po. The kids are really making progress. We’re happy with the win but we have a lot of work ahead of us,” he added.
One win, historic as it may be, won’t let the Lady Red Warriors get flustered and carried away easily.
But Vital and the rest of the squad know that such a historic opening performance marks the beginning of a promising journey ahead.
“This is why we went to UE so we can make history. We didn’t want the girls to go to the top and the best of the schools, because what’s the fun in that? So, we wanted to help bring UE back to the map. So it’s gonna be a progress,” said Vital.
