LA SALLE’s title chase has long been anchored on its veteran stars, but UAAP Season 88 is shaping up to be a rookie showcase for the Lady Spikers.
A new wave of debutants has emerged for the Taft-based squad, led by setter Eshana Nunag and winger Althea Cabradilla.
But on Wednesday night, it was rookie opposite hitter Mikee Santos who seized the spotlight.

The 6-foot-1 Santos was thrust into the starting lineup on short notice in La Salle’s 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 sweep of University of the Philippines after team captain Shevana Laput was sidelined due to illness.
Faced with the challenge of filling big shoes, the former La Salle senior high standout seized the opportunity to deliver for the 12-time UAAP women’s volleyball champions.
“Lagi ko lang pong iniisip kapag naglalaro ‘yung sinasabi ng coaches namin na this is the time na pakita po yung pinag-trainingan namin,” Santos said.
“As a rookie, gusto ko rin pong makatulong sa seniors. It's something po na lagi kong iniisip during the game.”
Though her chance came under unexpected circumstances, Santos welcomed the opportunity to gain valuable experience on college volleyball’s biggest stage, whether as a starter or off the bench.
“It's really important po kasi as a professional, siguro mas makakatulong po siya sa akin na mas maging confident and mas makapag-support,” she said.
“’Yung mga experiences din po ng mga ates, magiging inspiration po ‘yun na para mag-push pa po.”
La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus sees Santos’ situation as an ideal learning setup, with the rookie developing alongside seasoned leaders such as Alas Pilipinas standouts Angel Canino and Amie Provido.

“‘Yun ‘yung maganda na meron silang naabutang seniors na member ng Alas para ma-meet nila o kaya mahabol nila ‘yung level po na meron sila sa team,” said de Jesus.
“Mahirap kasi ‘yung wala nang seniors kasi wala kang hahabuling level na kung anuman sa team.”
