ATENEO remained unstoppable in 10 straight games and became the first team to clinch a Final Four berth, but Maddie Madayag insisted that her team won’t be complacent for the remainder of their UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Eagles continued to fly high, booking their 10th straight postseason appearance with a 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19 victory over National University on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
But Madayag stressed that their mission is not yet done.
“First and foremost, we shouldn’t be complacent kasi it’s not really that’s not part of our character,” said the co-captain, who made five blocks out of her 12 points in their Final Four-clinching win.
“We don’t want to show that just because we’re part of the Final Four, eh mage-easy-easy na kami,” she added.
Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro agreed with Madayag.
“Well, we’re always saying that our mentality is to be better than our best,“ Almadro said. “But iyon nga sabi ni Maddie, our mindset is right motivation all the time. We don’t care about the stats, sino number one, sino number eight.”
“What’s important is you win the last game of the season, so that’s what we’re thinking,” he added. “We’re not preparing for ito lang, we’re preparing long-term, we’re preparing hanggang sa dulo na nakaabot kami hanggang dulo.“
Madayag wants the Lady Eagles to finish their last three elimination matches strong, especially against rival La Salle on Saturday, which was the last team that took them down before waxing hot for 10 games.
“Yung mga patapos na games we want to finish it strong pa rin para hopefully mas marami pa kaming ma improve on like iwas errors na dapat gawin,” Madayag said.
