TASKED to fill the huge void left by Akari-bound Justine Jazareno, sophomore libero Lyka De Leon is unfazed by the bigger role she’ll have to play in La Salle’s defense of the UAAP women’s volleyball crown.
The La Salle-Zobel high school standout pointed out how she was rushed to step up following Jazareno’s surprise departure from the Taft side.
Lyka steps up
“With the sudden departure ni Ate [Justine Jazareno], parang out of the blue, na-force ako mag-step up,” said De Leon.
“At first, parang nahirapan po talaga ako pero ginabayan naman po ako ng coaches, sinuportahan ako ng mga teammates ko na kaya ko naman daw. Unti-unti, I’ll get there,” she added.
Result aside, De Leon, who registered 16 digs and 12 receptions in La Salle’s second straight-sets win of Season 86 over Far Eastern University, didn’t mince words in pointing out her squad’s erratic performance — one that she hopes will only get better in the coming games.
“Good thing po na nabi-build ko na yung confidence and yung character ko pero, overall, hindi pa po ako super satisfied how I performed today. Marami pa pong lapses. As a team, parang, hindi po kami satisfied by winning two games. We have bigger goals than this,” De Leon said.
