EVEN while she was sidelined, Shevana Laput found something to appreciate about La Salle: the way her teammates stepped up.
After missing the past two games while feeling under the weather, the Lady Spikers captain returned to action on Saturday with a renewed appreciation for the growth her squad showed in her absence.
“I’m very proud of the whole team,” she told reporters after they rose to 5-0 with a quick sweep of University of the East.
“I mean honestly, I don’t think they were looking for me. If anything, I’m just so happy that they rose to the occasion, rose to the opportunity that they got given because that adds to the confidence that they have.”

For the 6-foot-2 opposite spiker, the experience proved valuable for the green-and-white youngsters, especially Mikee Reyes and Althea Cabradilla who stepped up in her absence.
“Yes, I’m back, but at the same time, that confidence that they have won’t ever leave now,” she added.
Much work still ahead for La Salle
Laput, however, admitted that she is still working her way back into rhythm after her brief absence.
“I guess supposedly individually. Of course, I want to get back to my original playing, but one game at a time slowly but surely,” she said.
At the same time, as the season continues, Laput believes the Lady Spikers are still far from showing their best form.
“I don’t believe that our team is peaking. I believe that we’re on the right track though,” she said.
“We are doing the right things in practice. Yes, there are obstacles, there are challenges that come in our way, but that’s where we have to bounce back. We have to persevere and continue on.”
In fact, Laput believes La Salle has only begun to scratch the surface of its potential.
“Like you said, Round 1 isn’t over yet and I believe we still haven’t showed our true potential yet where I would say we’re like 60-percent of the way,” she said.
“And I think that’s a great position to be as of now.”
