ATENEO and University of the Philippines clash for the solo lead in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Maroons, with 3-1 win-loss records, face off at 4 p.m. after the 2 p.m. match between FEU (3-2) and Adamson (1-3).
After an opening-weekend loss, Ateneo has won three straight including a three-set demolition on UE Lady Red Warriors last week.
UP, meanwhile, got a big boost with a five-set win over titleholder La Salle and Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro knows it will be a tough match for the Lady Eagles led by Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag.
“Ang UP naman, ever since naman, matatapang na yan eh,” Almadro said. “We will work harder. We know they have the momentum. We just have to believe and we will give UP a good fight.”
UP head coach Godfrey Okumu will again be banking on national women’s pool member Tots Carlos, and women’s national Under-23 team captain Isa Molde.
Lady Maroons skipper Carlos says they can’t dwell on the victory over the Lady Spikers.
“Nabanggit nga na last time na natalo namin sila biglang bumaba yung laro namin,” said Carlos.
“Sabi ko nga kailangan namin magmove on kasi tapos na yun e, tapos na yung game for the first round so focus na kami sa next game namin which is Ateneo.”
