    Ateneo downs NU to stretch win streak to 10, books 10th straight semis appearance

    ATENEO scored its 10th straight win and booked its 10th consecutive semifinal appearance with a 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19 victory over National University on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

    The league-leading Lady Eagles improved their record to 10-1, staying unbeaten since an opening-weekend loss to La Salle.

    The Lady Eagles also eliminated the Lady Bulldogs, who slipped to 3-8, from the semis race.

    Ateneo takes on La Salle on Saturday at the Big Dome.

    Jules Samonte scored a season-high 13 points and made 19 digs.

    “Everyone contributed, everyone worked hard for it. We prepared for it also the past few days. That’s what got us here,” Samonte said.

    Kat Tolentino also had 13 points, including 11 kills. Maddie Madayag made five blocks and finished with 12 points. Bea de Leon and Ponggay Gaston added 10 markers each, while Deanna Wong dished out 33 excellent sets.

    Coach Oliver Almadro was glad the Lady Eagles got the job done early, being the first team to the semifinals, and says the best is yet to come.

    “Yung game namin today medyo slow kami alam niyo naman parang law of averages,” Almadro said. “Sana ito na yun, sana we peak at the right time na marami pa rin kaming adjustments na kayang gawin, marami pa kaming kailangan i-perfect sa ginagawa namin and we really have to work harder pa.”

    Princess Robles and Ivy Lacsina put up 13 points each for NU, which committed 39 errors.

    Libero Jennifer Nierva had 30 excellent receptions and 26 digs.

    NU battles Far Eastern University (7-4) on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
