ATENEO bucked a lethargic start to beat National University, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17 for its sixth straight victory on Saturday in UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Ateneo tightened its hold on the lead, improving its win-loss record to 6-1, while NU holds a 2-5 record for sixth spot.
Maddie Madayag led Ateneo with 17 points off 10 spikes, four service aces and three blocks.
Bea De Leon chipped in 13 points highlighted by four blocks.
Kat Tolentino and Ponggay Gaston added 10 apiece, while Deanna Wong dished out 29 excellent sets, 20 digs and two markers.
“First round is a really tough one for us, we really learned a lot from here,” Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro said.
“But I’m telling my players that going into the second round is a lot tougher, it will not be easy for us.”
The Lady Bulldogs committed 39 errors, while the Lady Eagles had 26 miscues.
Princess Robles had a game-high 18 points while making 21 excellent receptions for NU.
Ivy Lacsina had 11 points, while libero Jennifer Nierva had 30 excellent receptions and 29 digs.
